North Korea Holds Parliamentary Elections

Second Election Since Kim Jong-un Took Power

Kim Did Not Stand for Election

North Koreans are voting to elect the country's rubber-stamp parliament, the second such election since Kim Jong-un took power. Kim did not stand in the 2019 elections for the Supreme People's Assembly, the country's rubber-stamp parliament, a first for a North Korean ruler. He was also reported by state media to have not voted in the 2014 elections.

The elections are held every four to five years for the Supreme People's Assembly, the country's national legislature, and every four years for Local People's Assemblies. Parliamentary elections were expected to be held in North Korea in 2024, but it is considered likely they were delayed or canceled due to a lack of communication from the North Korean government.

The 2019 elections were held on March 10th to elect the members of the 14th Supreme People's Assembly. The elections were announced on January 6th, 2019.
